It’s February, and this month, I’m featuring Star-Crossed Stories! Why? Valentine’s Day. Duh.
But anyway, I’m deep in the midst of writing a new book that I can’t stop gushing about that features a years-long ago love affair that ended tragically but refuses to die. So, I thought I’d spend a little time on this beloved trope this month as we think about love and lovers.
At its heart, a Star-Crossed Story is one of love, fate, and tragedy. The term originates from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, referring to lovers doomed by the stars—whether by destiny, circumstance, or forces beyond their control. These stories explore love that defies the odds but often comes with heartbreak, sacrifice, or the cruel hand of fate. While traditionally romantic, star-crossed tales can also extend to friendships, rivalries, and even relationships between humans and supernatural entities, questioning whether free will can ever overcome the weight of fate.
